Sports Scandals
Don't know if you can compare American baseball & Japanese sumo, but there have been several marijuana scandals during the past year in Japan. Once the charges were proven, the players were dismissed, banned from sumo and those from outside Japan were deported. What happens to the American baseball players? Maybe the "stress of those huge monetary contracts" could be alleviated or prevented, by just not paying them soooo much money . . . ? http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/sns-ap-as-japan-sumo-drug-scandal,0,5709018.story

The problem is that with American sports, the people who support the teams secretly don't care that the players do steroids and whatever else as long as they (a) win, and (b) bring in crowds with money. So there are no real consequences beyond the scandal.
As a side note, I have to wonder if the sumo wrestlers are using marijuana as an appetite enhancer...
