There are 500 Rakan statues around the gate and on both sides of the stairs leading to the temple. "Rakan are the disciples of the historic Buddha who were entrusted to remain in the world as role models for ordinary people." No, I didn't count them or the number of steps going up. Yes, it was pretty high.
