Hiroshima Shukkeien Gardens 5/30/11

It's a beautiful Memorial Day & we're biking to Iwakuni Station to ride the train to Hiroshima today. I'm passing by someone's garden with tiny colorful flowers lining the sidewalk. It's only about a 15-20 minute ride, and once we arrive at the downtown station, the bike parking is free!

Wow - look at how rapid the water is flowing under the pedestrian bridge today as we ride across! No doubt it's from all the rain we had because of typhoon #2. The raised car bridge is to our right & the open sea is beyond.

Riding across the pedestrian bridge - this is our favorite shortcut to downtown Iwakuni.

The narrow street that leads us back to Hwy 188 & runs alongside the river. Speed limit is 30 kph (18.6 mph) & this is a 2-way street.

Inside the covered bike parking at the station. There are always LOTS of bikes here. I think many people leave bikes here to commute after they arrive on the train.

Bike with child seat. You can see her pink cushion & pink helmet. No one will bother them.

On the train now & the tide has gone out as we pass Otake.

Looking out the window as we approach Miyajima Island. We're riding alonsgside Hwy 2, but we always make MUCH better time than the cars!

An American couple boarded the train at the Miyajima stop & we all began talking. They decided to join us today on our visit to Shukkeien Garden in downtown Hiroshima. We've been here a few times before, but it's been a while & they thought it would be an interesting sight to see. It was so nice to have someone our age to visit with! After arriving at Hiroshima Station, we got on the streetcar & walked a few blocks to the garden. This is the grand gate that is the entrance.
