See how small these portions of fish & veggies are? (Although there are always several different dishes & flavors.) This is probably the way Americans should eat . . .
Turnips?
And by day 8 or 9, Stan is looking pretty thin, but his total stay was 12 days. In Japan, you are not released until you are COMPLETELY well. Period. No one would EVER be released with an IV! And the total bill - FOR EVERYTHING - was low enough so that we could pay in full & wait for reimbursement from our BC/BS. Japan has National Healthcare (like the "socialized medicine" that many in the US are so afraid of!). What I liked best was that the doctors actually made the decisions about his care - not our insurance company! No frills, but EXCELLENT care.
At the nurse's station, I saw this floral arrangement that someone had made. It looks like some kind of long grass, but at the ends, it was tied into grasshopper shapes! Imagine the time it took someone to do this!
Closeup of one of the grasshoppers.
