Welcome to Margie & Stan's Japan Adventure - our photo blog while living on MCAS Iwakuni in beautiful Yamaguchi Prefecture in Western Japan from 8/2004 to present. My photo above is the famous Kintai Bridge right here in Iwakuni. Be sure to check out Blog Archive (below left) for highlights of our travels. And leave us a comment - we'd love to hear from you! This is Asashoryu, who is from Mongolia. Yes, not all sumo are Japanese. At 27, he is the current grand champion, but he lost his first two matches in this spring tournament. He & his opponent prepare for their match. The man in the middle in their referee, who is elegantly dressed. At the end of the match of these higher-ranked sumo, they are presented with a stack of cash as their prize. Junko, my nail tech, told me they also will receive "tips" of cash from some of the wealthier audience members, if they liked the way they performed sumo today.
