JAPAN ADVENTURE

Welcome to Margie & Stan's Japan Adventure - our photo blog while living on MCAS Iwakuni in beautiful Yamaguchi Prefecture in Western Japan from 8/2004 to present. My photo above is the famous Kintai Bridge right here in Iwakuni. Be sure to check out Blog Archive (below left) for highlights of our travels. And leave us a comment - we'd love to hear from you! Sumo wrestlers preparing for their matches. There's a lot of posturing, concentration, and throwing of salt (for purification -- a type of prayer) before they are ready. This heightens the anticipation for the crowd as well. The actual match may last only a couple of seconds up to a minute or so. There are also interesting sounds going on. There is a man who bangs together wood blocks that sound very musical. As the rhythm gets faster, it is closer to the time for the match to begin. When each match begins, the referee shouts something at them while they struggle, but the crowd is usually not very verbal.
