Hiroshi and Eiko pose with Flat Stanley. They were very interested in this children's book and were pleased to be included in Stanley's adventures in Japan. Notice that they are both wearing slippers. Every Japanese home has a tiled entry inside the front door where you remove your shoes. Then you put on slippers and step up into the house. Our hosts were very thoughtful to find XL slippers for Stan's XL American feet which are too big for standard Japanese slippers! Notice the blue floor cushions stacked behind Hiroshi. These are used to sit around the coffee table in the LR, but they let me sit on the low sofa because of my bad knees.
Hiroshi's delicious birthday cake! The strawberries were perfectly ripe and fresh, as fruit always is in Japan, and the cake was creamy and light -- more eggs & not nearly so much sugar as American cakes, so we feel "less guilty" in partaking in sweets here! We discussed our upcoming trip to Beijing, China during Stan's spring break in April, and their upcoming trip to England during the summer while we are in the US. Their travel info about England makes me want to see England now, as well.
