Kumamoto Castle 5/15/11

The window in our 9th floor hotel room opens . . .

ALL the way!

Warning label for the window. Guess everyone is expected to use good judgment here.

This is Day 2 of our Kumamoto Trip & after a yummy breakfast buffet in our hotel, we're walking toward the castle. Interesting store window on the street near our hotel.

More colorful tour buses on the street.

We walked up the street a few blocks & turned left at the park to walk toward Kumamoto Castle. (We wanted to see the castle last time we were here a few months ago - during the volcano trip - but it was raining REALLY hard that day, so we only made it as far as a large department store, where a festival was being held.) So today's the day to see the castle! A few more blocks' walk & we find this interesting statue.

Found out this is statue of Kato Kiyomasa a famous Samurai with - Yikes! VERY interesting history . . .

Crossing over the moat to the castle.

There were several entrances, so we chose this one. But those stairs are definitely a dead end, so we'll keep walking . . .

Stan pointed out that these walls were always just stacked with smaller stones fitted in - mortar was never used. Amazing!

Stan's paying the small fee for us to enter & we get a souvenir ticket to keep!

Me inside one of the gates - entrance to Kumamato Castle. There were many, many buildings & gardens inside this enormous castle area.
