All these houses facing the river had steep driveways or stairs down to the level of their houses. I'm guessing that at some time in the past, the road was raised, along with a seawall to protect homeowners from flooding.
Practical metal shutters that slide closed to protect the windows. Wow - we could have used something like this when we lived in Gulf Shores!
