JAPAN ADVENTURE

Welcome to Margie & Stan's Japan Adventure - our photo blog while living on MCAS Iwakuni in beautiful Yamaguchi Prefecture in Western Japan from 8/2004 to present. My photo above is the famous Kintai Bridge right here in Iwakuni. Be sure to check out Blog Archive (below left) for highlights of our travels. And leave us a comment - we'd love to hear from you! Wouldn't my dad have had a fit about the apparent lack of safety here? Where's OSHA . . . ?

Notice the trash can right next to the left side of the potty?

That's because in most of Bangkok, you do NOT flush the toilet paper. You drop it in the always present trash can, which is always on the left side. (This was REALLY hard to remember, and I frequently forgot -- old habits!) Anyway, it's rude here to offer something to anyone with your left hand. This is because the right hand is for eating, but the left hand is for the toilet . . .

It's weird that good plumbing and sewage treatment is such a conundrum for the rest of the world - thus these "alternative" toilet practices. Or I assume that's the problem - not that they just like to keep their waste separated.
