U S Visit -- We're on a Break!
Below is our last posting until August. (This is your chance to get caught up with our blog . . .) We're leaving Japan on Monday 6/26 for a visit to the U S for a month. We're really looking forward to some grandchildren time and of course, visiting with friends and other family. Watch for our "July 2006 U S Adventures" to be posted after our return to Japan.

Yanai - Goldfish Lantern Craft and Tour of Historic District
"Double Bridges" in Iwakuni. We are on a tour today bound for Yanai, where we're going to make paper goldfish lanterns, a symbol of Yanai. Although we usually drive along the sea, today we're driving through the mountains -- it's about an hour's drive.

While the paint dries, I'm taking pictures of some other artwork inside this craft building. These projects are made from dried rice sheaths. The top one is a crane and the bottom one is a turtle.
This is our sensei (teacher) for our goldfish craft project. She was very patient with us.
"Exploded" goldfish parts. This very strong paper really absorbed the paint quickly, so we had to be very careful. In the small crockpot, there is hot parafin wax. We used this to paint on the designs and it also stopped the paint from bleeding into the white part.
